HOW DO SOLAR PANELS WORK?
Solar electricity systems use photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity, which can be used to power appliances and lighting in your home. These cells are able to generate electricity even on cloudy days, but their output increases with stronger sunlight. The strength of a PV cell is measured in kilowatts peak (kWp), which is the maximum rate at which it can produce energy under optimal conditions of full direct sunlight during the summer.
IS MY PROPERTY SUITABLE?
Solar panels are lightweight and can be easily adapted to various roofs. To get the most out of your panels, it is best to install them on a south, south-east, or south-west-facing roof that is not shaded. Even small roofs or north-facing shallow roofs can generate a significant amount of electricity.
DO I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION?
Generally, installations fall under permitted development rights so planning permission is not required but always check first. If you are within a conservation area, we will have to liase with the local planning authority to ensure the installation meets their guidelines.
HOW EXPENSIVE ARE THEY TO MAINTAIN?
Solar PV panels are virtually maintenance-free, with no moving parts. The main thing you need to do is keep the panels relatively clean and make sure they are not shaded by trees. Most panels are installed at an angle, and in many cases, the rain is sufficient to keep them clean and functioning optimally. Some of our customers have their local window cleaner clean their panels annually to ensure they are at max efficiency.
